I was fortunate to meet Clark Cape, as a lateral transfer, to the Sheridan Police Department in January 2008.  Right out of training I was assigned to the night shift, where Clark, at that time a Corporal, was my supervisor.  We hit it off immediately and bonded together as a friend and coworker. As the years continued Clark was promoted to Sergeant.  It was my pleasure to follow him when he was bidding shifts.  As a supervisor, he was fair, honest and held a higher standard for his people.  If you were wrong, he held you accountable.  If you were right, he stood up and fought for his employees.   I like many officers followed Clark because of his character, honesty and dedication. It was because of Clark and his supervisory style that his team was always leading amongst his peers.  It was my pleasure to work, the majority of my career, for Clark. During my 17 years in police work, with four different agencies, I would say Clark was one of the best sergeants I ever worked for and one of the best police officer’s you could ever work with. 

While getting to know Clark as a police officer, we also became friends. His love for cars, racing and his dedication to his family was paramount to him. He loved being a police officer but he adored being a dad. He always talked with pride about his daughter’s accomplishments in Taekwondo.  He talked often about his son’s interest in cars, like his. 

It was my honored to call him a dear and close friend. I will cherish the memories we have had together.

I met Cape as a  brand new and young police officer at Sheridan.  He was intimidating, a senior officer who didn't have any issues telling you what you did wrong,  and I did a lot of stuff wrong.   But on the same token he always advised you on how to be better. In a world where people tell you to get good grades,  Cape was the few people who would tell you on HOW to get good grades.  That's because most people don't know the HOW, but Cape did.

Cape was a very intellectual and insightful man.  He was too modest to flaunt it,  but if you would spend any amount of time with him it's very obvious he was the cream of the crop. 

 In briefing, I would often reference a joked to some obscured moment in history, and Cape would be the only one laughing. That's when I knew he was also a student of history.   After a year at Sheridan we became good friends but nothing more. 

 Then on one slow night on patrol we got to talking about cars, specifically Corvettes and Firebirds. Our feelings and thoughts into the history and the future of these cars were nearly identical. That day our friendship went to a whole new level and I think we finished our patrol shift holding hands and a goodbye hug in the locker.   I was single then and Cape almost turned me gay. I am pretty sure he felt the same way. 

 Like most of the people at Sheridan we cherished our time with Cape.   Cape,  if you are listening,  I miss you brother.  I don't often cry but when I heard of your passing, my heart stopped and I shead tears. 

You were so smart and wise but yet you can never figure out how to open coffee creamer without spilling it on your uniform!   God I miss  your ugly face!   When we meet up again I'll let you drive my Z if you let me drive your Firebird! RIP my white brother.

I met Clark on my first day as a cop in March 2006. He was a corporal at the time. Through the next few years I would have the pleasure of getting to work for him until he became a sergeant. When Clark became a sergeant he was the junior sergeant and had no choice of what days or shift he worked. By then I was a senior officer and could've worked any shift I wanted. I purposely chose nights on weekends. Because it was both fun and I wanted to work for no other sergeant than Clark. Clark was the best sergeant I ever worked for, and one of the best cops you could ever work with. He took me under his wing my entire career and passed so much knowledge onto me. He even started to prep me to be a sergeant with him. Unfortunately life took me out of the police field, and after that I made a really bad choice and mistake in life. Clark not once turned his back on me. Not during or after my career. He always stood up for his guys when he believed they were right. And when you were wrong he'd be the first to tell yoi, but then figure how to help you learn and better yourself. Even if that meant making some waves with the higher ups, which he did. I will always cherish the hundreds and hundreds of conversations we had working nights over coffee at 7-11, while eating, and while sitting car to car on slow nights. While Clark loved being a cop he loved being a dad more. He always beamed with pride during our chats about things like Lilly's accomplishments in The Kwon Do and school, and Pierce's growing interest in things like cars and Krav Maga. I am honored to have been able to serve with Clark as a police officer, to learn from him as a subordinate and young man, and most importantly to be able to call him a close friend. Clark was a great mentor and friend for the nine years that I had the honor of working beside him at Sheridan. You always knew Clark had your back, and you could always go to him for answers. He was not only a great cop but he was a great dad. His kids meant the world to him. You will be missed, Clark.

Clark and I grew up together as police officers. 1996 and on, while we were in our late 20s. Barry and others were there too.   
I've had many car partners and area partners. Clark was the first and really the best.  Many evening shifts spent in boredom or conversely going call to call. He was great cover, one of the highest compliments you can pay another cop. I've forgotten many of the scuffles, dust ups and brawls we've been in.  Clark and I began to instinctively know what the other would say or do.

I recall being a SAM unit with him on many occasions. This was a plain green sedan with two cops whose assignment was to go out and look for trouble, no answering radio calls, just look for bad dudes. We were in the area of a street robbery, he was driving and we saw him running. Without any words Clark drives up on the sidewalk and I knock the shit out of him with my open door. Like I said we knew how each other thought. 

I have no photos of Clark as real men do not photograph one another. I do have photos of my 95 BOSS Mustang. Clark spent a good amount of time turning wrenches on this. He drilled into the oil pan to install the supercharger as I was too afraid. Anything he did to that car worked the first time and well.

We both left that police department, the next time I would see Clark was in the fitting rooms of some department store as our wives picked clothes for our little kids. We had a laugh at how far away we were from chasing bad guys and working on drag racers. 

You'll be remembered and missed bro.
