Curtis Willam Smart

Curtis was delivered by Doctor Johnson and cared for by Nurse Blanche Largent. He grew up in the Cahone community,

living in his grandfather's house for the first 5 years of his life. When Curtis was 5 years old, his Mother Bessie married William Elbert Smart and the family moved to a farm close by. Curtis

attended Independence Elementary School, Cahone Elementary School, Urivan Elementary School, and Grand Junction Junior High School. Curtis attended Dove Creek Union High School for 2 years before he joined the US Navy and served for 3 years. He then returned to high school as a bus driver and a student, graduating in 1952. Curtis enrolled at Fort Lewis College for two years and transferred to West Minster College in Utah, he graduated with a BS degree in Education. He taught in Dolores County Schools for three years, then moved to Grand Junction and taught for 3 years. He married Betty Allan and moved to Aurora Colorado, where he

received MS in Admin from University of Northern Colorado and taught 8th grade science for 14 years, becoming vice principal for 4 years. He moved to Granby, Colorado and became the

owner of a motel and marina on the north shore of Lake Granby for 7 years. Curtis moved back to Cahone and worked at Mesa Verde National Park as a Manager of Tours and Transportation

for Aramark the concessionaire. He retired and moved to Grand Junction. Curtis passed away peacefully at Larchwood Inns on July 13. Curtis is survived by one grandson, Reece Smith of Cortez, Colorado.
