March 8, 1944 - October 6, 2015
Dan Maier grew up in Hays, Kansas before heading to Pewaukee, Wisconsin for his first teaching job. He followed his love of mountains, rivers, and blue-sky days west to Colorado, settling in Grand Junction.
Dan was a dedicated teacher and coach at both Fruita Middle School and Redlands Middle School, retiring in 2008. He taught 7th grade math, social studies, and life sciences. One of Dan's favorite lessons to pass on to his students was the ecology of the Colorado River System, sharing a rafting trip on the Colorado River to apply what the students had learned in the classroom. Further, as a coach, he led several teams of girls volleyball and basketball to multiple District Championships.
Throughout his life, Dan found joy and formed many friendships while fishing, skiing, whitewater rafting, sailing, boating at Lake Powell, and traveling. In retirement, he busied himself with a cabin remodel project in the mountains near Cimarron, Colorado where he explored local terrain via motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile with his family.
He is loved and remembered by his wife Carol; children Hannah, Shane (Robin), Rori (Scott), and Shad; and grandchildren Jame', Alexandria, Trevor, Braden, Jacob, Taylor, Dylan, and Rowan.
A memorial service will be held at The Redlands Community Center, 2463 Broadway, Grand Junction, CO 81507, on Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 2pm to 4pm.
