reminiscing the good life of a father
as his journey ends
surrounded by his family
support from loving friends
life began in twenty-nine
celebrated each twentieth of July
seventeen days into this year
a peaceful end realized
at first it was Joe and Gertie
who loved their only son
caring hands guided him forward
a useful life begun
he met his loving wife Joann
sixty-three years wed
faithfully she stood by him
tears of loss now shed
his eldest, daughter Diane Rae
a nurse, shared middle name
supported as much as loved him
as Alzheimer’s began its reign
his only son and building partner
Donnie Joe and Ann
spent younger years together
with hammer, nails, and blueprint plan
then came the third child Sara
along with husband Loren
spent cherished hours musing a book
his life’s story borne
at last came baby Sharon
who by his side has stood
would make him laugh and laugh and laugh
when others wondered if he would
in addition to four children
all totaled are nine grands
when adding eight more greats
his legacy now stands
working farms in northern Illinois
where his life began
before the call of war
and Korea, a very different land
a front-line medic in battle
months of tense brutality
permeated life with ptsd
and more we could never see
principled, he stood tall at home
loved the freedom of our land
outdoors and nature captured his interest
music flowed from his hand
all’s become a memory now
a faithful course in life was run
his love for God and Truth shall stand
his next stage of eternity begun
there’s one more group to be remembered
fellowship and faithful band
those of late he called ‘his people’
who by his side did stand
in memory care where all seemed foreign
from the spirit of Christ’s love
repeatedly he expressed he missed
‘his people’ with something from above
we will be eternally grateful
for every faithful deed
serving a loving heavenly Father
who knows our every need
we trust in the God of heaven
who gave his Son for us
faithfully guided the good life of a father
our hero, Donald Ray Borgman
