Donald W. Burgess October 29, 1924 – April 2, 2013 Don was born in Alamosa, Colorado to Roy and Lillian Burgess. His family moved to Montrose when he was young, and then to Grand Junction. He graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1942. Don enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943. He was an aerial gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also received the Air Medal and Four Oak Leaf Cluster. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from Mesa College in 1948. Don married Billie Young in 1947. Because of his passion for golf, Don became a golf pro, first at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango, then to the San Juan Country Club in Farmington, NM. The family then moved back to Grand Junction in 1972. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Billie; son, Don; parents, and brother, Lloyd. He is survived by daughter, Bobbie (Rich Redding) Lewellen; sister, Betsy Ringer; grandchildren, Tawnya (David) King; Kevin (Melissa) Lewellen, and Chad Burgess, and great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Nick, Katelyn. Cremation has taken place and private services will be held at a later date.
