Doris Gene Walters
“Punkin”
The most beautiful angel among us was taken to be with GOD on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 after a long hard battle with cancer. She was 84 years old.
Doris was born on June 14, 1932, in Quail, Texas. At the age of 4 her family loaded all of their possessions into their family truck and moved to Cortez. She attended all of school in Cortez, graduating in 1951. She then moved to Long Beach and found an old classmate and neighbor whom she eventually fell in love with and married. She and her beloved husband (Gene) of 61 years married in Long Beach, California, on August 5, 1955. After Gene was discharged from the Navy, they resided in Albuquerque for 12 years before returning to Cortez, where they lived for 48 years and raised two children. Doris was always looking for the next challenge. She tried her hand at real estate, but decided she wanted to own her own business. She then started up her own floral shop called the Rose Bowl. She loved creating new masterpieces with flowers. She eventually sold and bought a car rental agency, which she ran 24/7 until her retirement in 1994.
After retirement Doris and Gene moved to Grand Junction to be near their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Doris enjoyed many activities and sporting events with family. She was very involved in Grand Mesa Little League during the active years for her grandchildren.
She is survived by the love of her life, Gene; two children, Cindy (Guy) Roling, and Hugo (Jackie) Walters; five grandchildren, Brett (Cherie) Roling, Kiel (Stevie) Roling, Alexis (Colbie) Penick, Amber Walters, and Vance Walters; and four great-grandchildren, Karter Roling, Kamrynn Roling, Scott Penick, and Gavin Penick; three brothers, Dick Daves of Cortez, Don Daves of Colorado Springs, and Dean Daves of Cortez. She is preceded in death by both of her parents, Claude and Ruby Daves; and two sisters, Betty Lancaster and Melva Smith.
Doris loved her family and friends. Everyone was welcome at her house. She has an amazing collection of angels, and now she is an angel above us. We love her and will miss her every day of the rest of our lives.
A memorial service will be held at Callahan Edfast, 2515 Patterson Rd. on Saturday June 3 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Doris Walters’ name to Hope West, 3090B N. 12th St. Grand Junction, CO 81506.
