Dorothy Maxine Childs, age 91, formerly a resident of Denver, Colorado, passed away on April 20, 2014 at Family Health West in Fruita, Colorado after a lengthly battle with Alzheimers Disease.
Dorothy was born February 12, 1923 in North Platte, Nebraska to Edward Hawkins Saunders and Essie Clare (Gray) Saunders. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1941. Shortly thereafter, Dorothy and her family moved to Colorado. There she attended one year at C.S.U. in Ft. Collins and then began her life-long career in Denver as a legal secretary and office manager. Her first job was at the U.S. Attorney’s office
She met Laurence Taft Childs of Holden, Massachusetts and they were married April 27, 1943 in Coer d lene, Idaho. They divorced later in life.
Dorothy always enjoyed volunteering and was forever helping those in need. She spent countless hours in hospitals and nursing homes visiting patients and unselfishly sharing a good deal of her time with others.
Dorothy never asked for much but always seemed to be right there when you needed her and we all loved her dearly for that. We will miss her sense of humor and smile, her tenderness, compassion and love and her quiet giving way.
Dorothy was preceeded in death by her sister Jewell May Bradshaw and brother in law Jonas Lloyd Bradshaw; her sister Mildred Clare Postel; her brother Earl Gray Saunders and sister in law Marie Brown Saunders and her parents, Ed and Essie Saunders. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Childs Whiteman of Westminster, Colorado; her son Edward James Childs of Brasilia, Brazil; and four grand daughters; Morgan Lynn Childs Notaro (Tony Notaro) of Colorado Springs,CO, Patricia Ann Graff Amos (Gary Amos) of Longmont, Colorado, Terry Lynn Graff Howard of Vancouver, Washington and Lachelle Lea Hulen of Lakewood, Colorado; 8 great grandchildren: Ashton Ryan White, Kirsten Lynn Kanger, Chad Nicholas Howard, Sydney Brooke Amos, Sarah Christine Amos, Dakota Taylor Amos, Dylan Richard Amos, Sarah Rose Janeczko and 1 great great grand daughter Aubrey Rose Upchurch and countless nieces and nephews.
At her request there will be no services, and cremation will take place in Grand Junction, Colorado. We hope that in Lieu of services you will spend time remembering all of the ways that Dorothy touched us and brought joy to our lives and to hold in your hearts your memories of her. Even though she lost her memory to her terrible disease years ago, her sweet and loving personality lingered always through her illness.
The family would like to thank Family Health West and all of their staff for the extreme loving care and kindness extended to our mother over the years. We ask that in lieu of gifts and flowers that you send donations to Family Health West in her memory.
