

Dorothy E. Griffin passed away peacefully on January 28, 2017 at the age of 97. She was born on January 27, 1920 in Grand Junction to Lindsey and Effie McPeek. She and her five siblings grew up in Grand Junction and she graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1937. She married Fred G. “Ted” Griffin who was in the insurance business for over 30 years prior to his death in 1971. Together they raised their two children, Dan and Diane, and Dorothy was a stay at home wife and mother providing a happy and secure home life. A few years after Ted’s death, she married Frank Kreps who was the retired Fire Chief for the city of Grand Junction. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending time at Lake Powell. Frank passed away in 1988.
Dorothy enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, and golf. As a teenager she climbed Independence Rock in the Colorado National Monument. She skied into her 60’s and continued to golf into her 70’s. She was a world traveler, enjoying trips to the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, Egypt (where she rode a camel), Japan, and China ( where she walked on the Great Wall). She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her Camaraderie group. She was a long time member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed many church activities.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Dan, and his wife, Rita; and her daughter, Diane Bonello, all of Grand Junction. She is also survived by five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.
The family thanks the staff of Mantey Heights Rehab and Nursing Center for its care of Dorothy for the past 19 months following her stroke in July of 2015, as well as the hospice nurses of HopeWest. Also, a special thank you to her neighbors, Shirley Kluth and Dacre Williams, for their kindness and concern for her while she was still residing in her home.
Services, with a reception to follow, will be held on February 4 at 11 am, at the First Christian Church at 1326 N. 1st Street in Grand Junction. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Roice Hurst Humane Society, CLAWS, or the organization of your choice.
