After a brief battle with cancer, Douglas Grogan has gone to be with Jesus. On Wednesday afternoon, October 11, while at home with his family, Doug left his broken body on earth and stepped into the wholeness of heaven.
Doug was born May 21, 1949 in Denver, CO to Harley and Gloria Grogan. The Grogan family ultimately settled in El Cajon, CA for Doug’s high school years where he met Peggy Graham. They were married on March 20, 1970. Doug served with the U.S. Air Force from 1969-1972 and graduated from Simpson College with a BA in Biblical Studies in 1975.
Following graduation, Doug and Peggy moved their family to Kailua, HI where they planted Kailua Community Church. They served there for 9 ½ years, seeing the church through two building programs. While in Hawaii, Doug also served as a police chaplain with the Honolulu Police Department and completed an MA in Communications at the University of Hawaii.
Over his 49 years of licensed ministry with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, Doug pastored churches in Hawaii, Utah, Alaska, Iowa, and Colorado. He also served in district leadership, first as a Church Planting Director in the MidAmerica District of the C&MA (Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri) from 1994-1998. He later served as the MidAmerica District Superintendent from 1998-2003, 2009-2010, and 2012-2015. His service to the denomination continued as a member of the C&MA Board of Directors. He served three terms on the board, four of those years as the Vice Chairman.
Doug is remembered by all for his magnetic personality, his crazy sense of humor, his love of people and devotion to God. He lived fully and encouraged others to do the same. In retirement, Doug combined his love of people and nature by working with the US Forest Service. Known as the Fish Whisperer, Doug worked at the Grand Mesa Visitors’ Center since 2018. He loved meeting those who came from around the world and often found a point of commonality with them. Doug saw people, particularly those who may otherwise be overlooked, and he made a difference in their lives.
Doug is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy Grogan, daughter Melissa (Jeffrey) Singfiel of Prishtina, Kosovo, daughter Michelle (Daniel) Van Gesen of West Jordan, Utah, his four grandchildren: Madison, Jordan, Reilly and Jessica, his brother Randal Grogan of El Cajon, California, sister Sandra (Joseph) Espiritu of Kailua, Hawaii, and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Harley Grogan, mother Gloria Grogan, and sister-in-law Linda Grogan.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at River of Life Church in Grand Junction, Colorado, October 28, at 1:00 pm.
Since Doug hated ties, attire is casual.
