Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.callahan-edfast.com for the Gromke family.George Bernard Gromke of Grand Junction, passed away on July 30, 2021. Born in Poland on September 29, 1927, to George and Mariana. George immigrated to the United States after serving in World War II, landing in Chicago with the help of a caring family who sponsored his immigration and helped him adapt to life in America. While obtaining his citizenship he met his wife, Gertrud. In 1956, they married and started their family in Skokie, Illinois before purchasing their home in Morton Grove, where they raised their three children and pets.
Although his earlier years were not easy, George and Gertrud were able to live a blessed life; enjoying family vacations each summer, traveling to many National Parks with a camper. During these he could share his favorite hobby, fishing, with his children. George enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours in the family garage that doubled as his workshop. One of the ways he showed love to his family was by filling their home with handcrafted wooden pieces. He could create works of art from items that he found on his walks and bike rides, finding a second life for anything. His inclination toward nature and love for animals led to him building 50 birdhouses that were installed in the forests near his home. He translated this talent into his career as a machinist, and his dedication to that instilled a strong work ethic in his children. As a father, he was loyal, selfless and ever present. He was proud to give his children the opportunities that weren't afforded to him.
In 1995, George and Gertrud retired to the Grand Valley. Although he never received a formal education, he spoke three languages. He was tender and generous, spending countless hours volunteering at the Church and neighborhood soup kitchen.
George was a faithful servant of God and created a strong faith base for his children. George was preceded in death by his daughter Marianne. He is survived by his wife Gertrud, son George (JoAnne Virgilio) daughter Angela (John D’Antonio) and son-in-law Andris Ozolins. George was also the beloved grandfather of Erik (Robert), Kevin, Andrew (Lindsay), Megan, Kali, George, Kristin, and Jamey, as well as a great-grandfather to Rainn and William.
The family would like to thank Hope West for their warm and extraordinary care for George.
