They met at the swimming pool where Helga, along with her friends and teammates of the Bad Toelz, Germany sports teams, practiced then relaxed after completing their training sessions. The pool, gym, and track area were on the military base on the south side of the town. The installation was home of the US Army's 10th Special Forces, US Army's NCO Academy, and the 7th Army Honor Guard that supported both in field and formal activities, of which Larry was a member of.
They met on July 6, 1961, and Larry was taken in mind, heart, body and soul by her beauty and
finesse from the moment he saw her. She said “NO” to several of his requests to walk her home, and
after many tries, she agreed to let him tag along with the group of about 20 people to an ice cream parlor in town. Again, it took several tries to get her to agree to a date for a walk and later a movie.
Always with a chaperon, no exceptions, for several months, after which the parents agreed to permit
them to be alone on dates.
Larry and Helga were engaged on November 10, 1962, in Munich, Germany, and observing German custom, they each bought and wore a ring. The next year was eventful, Helga graduated from college in Munich, and Larry reenlisted in the Army and transferred to the US Army School Europe, where he became an instructor and was promoted to Sergeant. The most memorable event however was the wedding of Larry and Helga by German law on November 22, 1963. The day took a turn later in the afternoon with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. That did not stop the loving couple though, as they still had their church wedding day in the military chapel, on base in Murnau, Germany.
Being an accountant, Helga worked as a bookkeeper for the American Express Bank until their daughter, Carolyn, was born in 1965. She then happily became the homemaker, loving wife, and mother, while keeping the home fires burning as Larry continued his military career, including serving three years in Vietnam. She returned to work to help support the family with more income in 1978, by becoming a real estate agent. She kept this job until she retired and moved with Larry to Fruita, Colorado in 2004. Never a day did she falter in any manner of supporting, loving, and helping her family, including assisting in the rearing of her two lovely grandchildren, Kelci and Gage.
This wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and Superwoman will be missed in so many ways, that I cannot truly express in my limited words of love for her. So please dear God, take her under Your loving care until I can join her in our peace, love, and life forever with You in our Heavenly home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, February 12, 2024 at Martin Mortuary and a committal service at 1:00 PM, Monday, February 12, 2024 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
