There aims were poor to say the least, and they turned that poor thing into hamburger in the field. I was able to end the hazing for my shooting abilities that year. One year, when hunting for elk was slow, I planted a whole pile of fresh elk droppings at the front door of the camper that he and Fred used. It was a very fun couple of days until I eventually came clean to them about what I had done. We hunted together for around 30 years, finishing up on our property in 
Crawford. That is where he met and fell in love with Beckon, like everyone does, on her sixteenth birthday when she joined us on our annual hunting trip.  It ended one year when he accidentally shot a hole through the roof of our cabin on opening morning. He looked at me after I got myself up off of the floor and said "I guess my hunting days are over".
Jackie and I were finally able to convince him and Rosie to move to Grand Junction in the early 1990's, where they enjoyed the rest of their lives. They were a big part of Kelsey and Colby's lives and showered them with love as any grandparent would do. Jack eventually moved in with Jackie and I until his health forced him into the nursing home in 
Rifle. That specific nursing home was a blessed way to spend his last years as they treated him like the hero he was every day that he was there. Including the procession out with the funeral home when he passed where all of the staff and residents lined the hall at full attention and salutes. That was very moving and will always be special to us. We 
will miss you Jack.

He delivered watermelons in a big truck that came from the family farm. He also was a freelance driver, one job was 
delivering moonshine to another county. He quit that job after an experience where his truck and the contents were hijacked. His story was that they blocked him off, came out with guns. He said he simply got out of the truck, left it running and waved goodbye to them as they drove away and never went back to get his pay. Jack also was a very good basketball player, according to himself, since I never witnessed it. He was a physical and tough player. His main job 
on the school team, as well as the sandlot teams, was to go in during hard times and use his elbows and body in defense, since he had mastered that. He also loved football, and had a love /hate relationship with the Denver Broncos.
He pulled a lot of strings to get into the Army at the beginning of World War Two. His first MOS was as a medic. Medics were not allowed to carry weapons. However, as one of his stories went, he confiscated a pistol from a dead German soldier and carried it secretly. That weapon saved his life one time when he was walking a street in Germany and a 
German soldier appeared on a rooftop and was aiming to shoot him. Needless to say he was a good shot with that pistol.
After he retired from TRW he moved to Westcliff Colorado. He absolutely loved it there. It was filled with many, many hunting opportunities. That is when we started hunting together as a family. I was young and full of energy at that time. I liked to cover a lot of ground in the Sangre de Cristo mountains and he was always right there with me, never 
complaining about the long walks that I would take him on. There was a time for a couple of years where the animal I harvested seemed to be wounded first in one of the front legs before I was successful with my next shot. Him and Fred loved to tease me about that. Then one year, him and Fred drew there bead onto the same small deer at the same

I met Jack in 1979 when Jackie and I started dating. At the time he was working for TRW, a defense contractor in Colorado Springs using his skills and knowledge in electronics working on top secret projects for the US government. The skills he learned and self-taught himself as part of the Pershing missile project in Europe. He was quite proud of his job after his successful military career.
He was an avid bowler at the time also. Shortly after I met he quit drinking cold turkey. He told me that he was just tired of waking up hung over. He had quit smoking similarly. That's a testament to his strength and perseverance.
Within a year or so, when it was obvious that Jackie and I were getting along quite famously in our relationship, Rosie asked him what he would do if we married. His response was that he was "better than most". However, that was tested when I moved to Denver and his beloved daughter 
eventually moved there. Later Rosie told me that his response was that he wanted to get his hunting rifle and shoot me.  Fortunately, he got over that.
Jack loved to tell stories also.
He was the consummate mechanic. Self-taught also. He was always tinkering on a vehicle or two. And he loved talking about cars and the evolution of cars, since he experienced the early years of the automobile industry. One of his stories involved two of his uncles, one who always drove too far to the right on the dirt and sometimes muddy roads and one of his jobs was to always help him get unstuck. The other Uncle always drove to far to the left and one of his jobs was to fix the car when it crashed into another. He also grew up with a lead foot. Jackie inherited that from him. 
He supported himself during those hard times. He delivered newspapers on his bicycle, while according to him, he was sometimes doing his homework while driving his bike one handed delivering those papers as well as Western Union telegraphs.  

I was always amazed at how many of my uncles had served in the military. Most did their three years and moved on. Some didn't, and Jack was one of those. When Jack would come to my house to visit my parents with Aunt Rosie, I remember him as a tall man. Whether he was physically tall or not, that was how Jack looked to my young eyes.  I would wonder what made men like Jack make a career out of the service. After my stint in the army, I began to understand.  While stationed at Fort Bragg every evening across the entire Fort, taps would be played across a speaker system covering miles.  Every single day.  No matter where you were or what you were doing, you would stop, come to attention and salute while Taps was played.  When I worked at Safeway Stores, and my shift was over, nobody ever played Taps.  I understand why a person would make a career out of it—a lifetime of honor. I wish I could be there to" proudly" stand at attention with a crisp salute for Jack's Taps.   

I often have Alexa sound off with taps when I am going to bed at night, and I know it sounds corny, but I do this. My wife gets me.  As the bugle plays,  I remember, I remember my uncles – my cousins – my buddies. 

Tonight I will remember Jack.  I will stand at attention and salute in honor of Jack.

When we lived in Germany we learned to support other soldiers. Some with families and many without. Holidays were shared with those  Dad worked with . When he wasn't fixing someone's washer or dryer, his hobbies included bowling, horseshoes, and shuffle board. Dad and mom loved to dance and would frequent the  NCO club or host a gathering at our house. 

One thing that stood out in my memory is how Grandpa said, "wash your teeth" instead of brush.

We went to Westcliff, Colorado one winter for Christmas. I was 8 or 9 years old. Grandpa let us drive the snowmobiles and I rear-ended  my sister on her snowmobile.(Her fault of course) and did a little damage. Years later, Grandpa came to Washington and drove my truck. When he went to park he accidently hit our utility trailer. When he got out he said, "I guess we're even !" 

Jack's military career took us across the U.S. and Germany. The travels let us experience so many adventures  and sights. Yet it hindered our togetherness  once  we started  our own journeys in life.  I cherish the pictures when all the siblings were together.

Dad married a woman with three children, the oldest just starting  her married life. He gave our family a sense of stability as a good provider. I hope he knew how much that meant in our lives. 


I will never forget Jack and his "Okey" accent always telling stories and laughing at all the holiday gatherings we saw him at. He was truly one of my favorite faces to see. Such a funny and firey old guy who made just about anyone who came near him feel comfortable and laugh. He will definitely be missed. He was a great man who served our country well.
