James Joseph Smith

Jim was born on February 15, 1945, in Del Norte, Colorado, to Cornelius “Neil” John Smith and Gladys Lucinda Weiford Smith. He grew up with the values of honesty, responsibility, and perseverance that would guide him throughout his life. Those who knew him best remember him as friendly, wise, and handy, a man who could be counted on for good advice, a helping hand, and a warm smile.

He attended high school at Sangre de Cristo schools, and college at Adams State College in Alamosa, where he continued to build the foundation for a life of steady work and meaningful relationships. Jim spent many years working as a tool salesman, a career that suited his practical nature and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. In more recent years, he worked in real estate, where his knowledge, integrity, and easy manner served him well. He was respected by those who worked alongside him and appreciated by those he served.

On June 18, 1966, Jim married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betsy” Orton, in Monte Vista, Colorado. Their marriage was a lasting partnership built on love, loyalty, and shared memories. Betsy survives him in the family home in Grand Junction, where their life together was centered around family, laughter, and the simple joys of everyday living.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son, Rodney Smith and his wife, Robin, of Grand Junction, Colorado, and his daughter, Valerie Kennedy and her husband, Gar, of Grand Junction. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Jennifer Towner and her husband, Mark, Kyle Kennedy and his wife, Kaylyn, and Sean Kennedy and his wife, Kalea. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Bryson, Lana, Ryland, and Bradley James. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a host of friends who will miss him dearly.

Jim loved the outdoors and found great joy in golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and four-wheeling. These interests reflected his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for time spent in nature.

His love of watching the Denver Broncos was a source of entertainment. Above all else, he cherished being with his family, and many of his happiest moments were shared in their company. Whether gathered around a campfire, out on the golf course, or simply enjoying time at home, Jim made those around him feel valued and loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Donna and Ernie Stoeber, Bernard Smith, Janice Jones, Beth Perkins, Kathy Norfleet, and other beloved family members. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Cremation was chosen, and a Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2026 at the Fellowship Church, 24 Road, Grand Junction, Colorado.
