

John (Jack) was born on September 29, 1928 in Parsons, Kansas. His family moved to Coffeeville, Kansas where he spent his childhood. In 1945 they moved to Grand Junction, where he attended and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1946. He went on to attend Mesa College and Western State College in Gunnison, CO. Jack was very athletic and played baseball and football. As a young man he was on swimming and track teams, and worked as a lifeguard.
Jack married Leona Sanford in 1950. They celebrated their 75th Anniversary in September 2025. They both enjoyed a full and active life together, having many friends, traveling, and building a cabin on Grand Mesa. He was happy working in the garden, an avid reader and enjoyed attending and supporting local sporting events. Jack’s career was with Mountain Bell Telephone Co. He began there as a telephone lineman and retired as an Engineer.
Jack leaves behind his wife Leona and two daughters Treva Houck and Amy (Chris) Neilsen. He was proud to have five grandchildren, Jarrod Houck, Sadye (Neilsen) Saad, Tucker Neilsen, Parker Neilsen, Tyler Neilsen (deceased) and six great-grandchildren.
