On the night of January 8th, 2013, Tommy Vigil passed on to greener pastures after losing his battle with cancer. He passed at home, peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was 56.
Tommy was born on December 23rd, 1956 in Chama, New Mexico, the youngest of 8 children. At a very young age the family settled in Western Colorado where Tommy began showing interest in art and music. Artistry would prove to be a life-long passion for Tommy. He was a creative man with an active imagination and he was easily fascinated by anything that required intuition. Within his lifetime he drew thousands of pictures, mostly landscapes and portraits, many of which he gave to family and friends. He read just as many books and had a particular interest in non-fiction thrillers. Tommy also wrote poetry, played the drums in various bands, and was never in short supply of a rhyme, pun, or punch line. Among other interests Tommy absolutely loved Broncos football and playing chess for hours. For all the interests and hobbies Tommy had, his true passion for living lie within the love he had for his family.
On August 18th, 1979, Tommy married the woman who became his soul mate and very best friend, Lana Adamson (Vigil). Together, Tommy and Lana had two children, Mary (Romero) born in 1978, and Jose "Joseph" Vigil born in 1980. Tommy supported his young family working as an industrial laborer in Grand Junction. Tommy spent a lifetime working with his durable hands and they wore the scars to prove it. He was never afraid of hard work which was convenient for the Vigil family as he was frequently called upon as the handyman of the bunch. In 1996, Lana Vigil gave birth to Anthony Sanchez who Tommy would raise and love as his own son. Anthony brought a fresh breath of life to an aging Tommy and the two passed the years together riding bicycles, and playing baseball and football. Tommy was also the proud grandfather of four wonderful children from his daughter, Mary.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Matias Vigil and Beatrice Herrera, and by his four older brothers, Joe Salazar, Mike Salazar, Albino Salazar, and Johnny Vigil.
He is survived by the love of his life, Lana Vigil and their three children, Mary Romero, Jose Vigil, and Anthony Sanchez. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Teresa Keagy of Denver, Sarah Marques of Denver and Connie Vigil of Grand Junction. Other survivors include a devoted son in law, Paul Romero, whom Tommy loved and respected very much and his grandchildren, Ciara Romero, Isaiah Romero, Israel Romero and the subject of all his spoils, baby girl Izabelle Romero, all of Grand Junction. Coming from a large family, Tommy had many niece's, nephew's, cousins and friends.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Monday, January 14th, 2013 from 10-11 a.m.
