Joyce Eugene Dyer
October 30, 1924 - September 16, 2016
Joyce Dyer died peacefully on Friday, September 16th, 2016, at Aspen Ridge Care Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.
She is survived by three of her children, Jon (Amy) Dyer of Grand Junction; Jayne Dyer Reiber of Grand Junction, and Jan Dyer Mulder of Escondido, CA; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Jim Dyer, and her son, James Craig Dyer, preceded her in death. A family service is planned at a later date.
Joyce was born October 30, 1924, in Peabody, Kansas and moved to McLean, Texas around the age of three months. McLean High School was where she met her husband to be at the age of 16; their high school lockers were beside one another. James Kenneth Dyer was a star football player and Joyce was a drum majorette. Their 74th Wedding Anniversary would have occurred this year on December 24. For almost three quarters of a century, she and Ken walked hand in hand through the trials and tribulations of this life. Sometimes separated by continents due to war. They both were excellent role models of the Greatest Generation.
She had no desire to be famous. Her highest ambition was to be a good mother, establish a happy home and rear her family to be honored and useful citizens. She was fiercely proud of being an American. Her chief concern was always the happiness and comfort of her family. She had a magic gift for homemaking.
In the mother-heart of Joyce, the love of her children and family was the most glorious thing on this earth. Mrs. Dyer's heart was the schoolroom of her children. The stories learned at her knee will never be wholly forgotten, these lessons taught to her family, the little simple prayers, the admonitions for future conduct, the keen sense of responsibility to society, these teachings will follow her son and daughters and grandchildren through all the vicissitudes of their existence.
Gma Joyce was of a quiet, reserved disposition: but if you knew her well, you knew of her infectious laughter, listening ear, her fun sense of humor and her fiery temper. Joyce had strength of character and purity of purpose, which brought her the highest respect and deepest regard from family, neighbors and friends. Her determined, loving manner brought comfort to many a sufferer. Underneath her positive outlook on life, her thoughtfulness for others, her joy of small, simple things, and love of the great outdoors was a confidence that could not be shaken. Family gatherings in the lovely Dyer home will be greatly missed. Thanks for the memories dearest, Mama Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Aspen Ridge: Alzheimer's Care Facility, or HopeWest Hospice. The Nurses and Staff from both organizations are to be commended for their excellent care of our mother.
