Lester Sons was my boss, my mentor and at certain times, my confessor. I was his deputy (for lack of a better term) for a number of years before he retired. I learned from the best – an extremely smart and well-read individual; a great writer, a great editor, a top-notch manager. But most of all, an empathetic person who would lose his oftentimes gruff demeanor when you needed his ear. He prepared me well for the tasks I would ultimately have to assume and I am forever grateful for that. 

I stayed in touch with Lester for a while after he and Meya moved to Colorado. His dream was to live in a high, dry region of the country where he could ski – and in a climate that did not spur the seasonal allergies that bedeviled him. That he was able to do that in his later years was a true blessing. 

Regrettably, we lost touch a few years ago. But seeing the picture of Lester that accompanies this obit provides some solace to the otherwise sad news – a little, whimsical grin, almost as if he knows something none of the rest of us do.

Lester Sons was a wonderful man and a great news editor. He gave me my first full-time job as a news reporter at The Star. He was a kind, gentle soul. 🙏❤️ He was loved by many and he will be forever missed. 

I know this is very late. I just found out. I am so sorry to know this. Les and myself were great friends and co-workers at the Star for many years. I would bet that he is running the newsroom in Heaven these days . Also I am sure he is rooting for Michigan Football. God Bless Him.

Aunt Meya, we are so sorry for your loss. We are just now finding out about Uncle  Lester's passing. Our prayers are with you and hope you are doing well.
