Loy was born September 2, 1940 in Grand Valley (Parachute), Colorado. He grew up in Fruita, Colorado where he attended grade school through high school. He graduated in 1959.
After graduation, Loy joined the National Guard along with two of his best friends, Billy Dolan and Darrell Higginson. Loy later served in the Army Reserves during the Bay of Pigs and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
In 1963, Loy married Minnie Blair of Whitewater, Colorado. He adopted her two sons, David and Richard, from a previous marriage. Loy also had two children with Minnie, Diana and Daniel.
Over the following years, Loy worked as a diesel mechanic and a truck driver, both keeping equipment running and hauling it wherever it was needed. He was employed by Willard Pease, Veco, Four States as well as various other companies providing services to the oil field industry. At one time, Loy worked at the copper mine in Globe, Arizona.
In 1992, Loy met and married Lovell Grych of Mack, Colorado. After marrying Lovell, Loy turned his incredible work ethic and mechanical skills to raising premium horse hay and maintaining the equipment and sprinkler systems required to do so. Loy rarely met a piece of equipment he couldn’t repair and was well known for his skills. Loy also enjoyed growing vegetables, which he shared with family, friends, and the church community.
Loy is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ima Sasser, and his younger brother Jackie. He is survived by his wife Lovell, his sister Sheila Edelen, his daughter Diana (Howard) Wilsey, his sons Daniel, David, and Richard, and his two step-children, Paul (Andrea) Grych and Ann (Earl) Forbes.
A memorial in Loy’s honor will be held on Saturday, August 17th, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Loma Community Church 1307 Garfield Street, Loma, CO 81524. Loy will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, Colorado.
