Kami knew that the little infant growing inside was strong. For the first five weeks of pregnancy, he only allowed Kami to eat watermelon. As he grew, he had the ability to give a one-two punch like a boxer and on one occasion, he kicked so hard that the remote, that was on mom’s tummy, flew onto the floor.
Mason excitedly prepared to be a dad. He went to every baby appointment and was thrilled to find out on the ultrasound that they were having a turtle, not a taco. They both had always wanted a son.
Mason spent hours painting and preparing the nursery. They only changed the nursery colors twice. Gray and white was perfect, with clouds and stars. They loved filling it with the beautiful and meaningful gifts from Maddex’s baby shower.
Maddex would prove to be a big boy, both in size and in spirit. Everyone thought Kami was carrying twins and at birth he was 8 lbs 1 oz. Maddex had his own birth plan. The parents waited and waited and waited, only to realize that on March 5, they had to run to the hospital because, unknowingly, Kami’s water had broken days earlier. After a long labor, they shared Maddex’s first moments during an emergency C-section. Hearing Maddex cry and catching a quick, unforgettable glympse he was whisked to the NICU. He was immediately dubbed the most beautiful baby.
Twelve days later, on March 17th, their lives changed forever. Maddex was diagnosed with a rare cancer. A one in a million rare cancer. Despite a grim prognosis, Maddex was ready to experience life. His body and countenance looked healthy, which showed his incredible will to live and love life.
As a family they decided to cherish every moment together, so family time started every day with his favorite music (usually the Beatles) and watching dad dance for him. They would sit on the porch, go for walks, and occasionally watch dad play frisbee golf, all while soaking up the sun. Maddex loved going for drives because it was relaxing enough to nap.
Maddex loved cuddles and being close; therefore, the bassinet was short lived and he became a permanent fixture in mom and dad’s bed or on mom’s lap. You would often catch him peeking out of his sleep to make sure his mommy was holding his hand. Every night spent feeding and holding him, will always be moments to treasure. Sweet cuddles from his grandma’s also remain perfect memories.
Maddex’s tiny body housed such an enormously, wonderful, sweet spirit. He was a light and joy to all who knew him. You felt as though his eyes could look into your soul. He had the ability to capture the heart of everyone God sent to help him on his journey. The many doctors and staff spoke of being honored to have played a part in his life. His beautiful strawberry blonde hair was always a conversation starter for sure.
It was quite clear from the beginning, that Maddex could inspire and empower others with his strength. There was also a quiet calm about him that was contagious.
As Maddex’s health declined, he endured it with grace. It seemed as though he was memorizing every moment of life and every morsel of love.
In the early morning of Saturday, May 21, 2022, he was taken back to heaven. We’re confident that he had asked Jesus for a few more moments, because he had stayed longer than anyone had ever imagined.
Mason and Kami are proud and honored to be his parents. They are grateful for all the many tender mercies that God granted them so they could know their son, their sweet Munko.
He is survived by his mother, Kami Legits and his father Mason Thomas; his grandparents Walt & Ellie Legits and Anthony Thomas; his great-grandmother Mary Hall; his aunts and uncles Ashley & Daynon Gardner, Ethan & Tia Legits, Lissy & Bryson Rasmussen and Jessica Thomas; he also has 7 cousins. Maddex joins his grandma, Caroline Thomas, in heaven.
