Today, we remember Mary Virginia Sissom, who died September 10, 2026, at 2am at the HopeWest hospice care center in Grand Junction, Co. She was born March 10, 1935, to Floyd Franklin Spangler and Virginia Mae Barton in Madison, Indiana. She was their first child, followed by 3 brothers, William, David, and John.
She moved to Fruita, CO in 1949. She married Thomas Earnest Sissom on August 19, 1955, in Palisade C0. They had 3 children, James, Vicki, and Barbara before the divorcing in 1974. She lived in Clinton, CO for 63 years. She worked as a bookkeeper at Mesa drug store and a clerk at Home Style Bakery.
She enjoyed embroidery, quilting, fishing and playing cards. She made a blanket or quilt for most of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed sending birthday cards for every child in the family. She loved spending time with family going camping and fishing. She also traveled all over the US. She collected state magnets from every state she visited. Her father took her and her brothers to see her first movie "Don't fence me in" and she loved singing that song for the rest of her life.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Floyd and Virginia, her brothers Bill, Dave and John, her husband Thomas, her daughter Barbara, her grandson Gene, and her great grandson Jonathan.
She is survived by her children, Jim and Vicki, her grandchildren John, Jeremy, Tom, Amiee, Shelly, Brandee, Breann, Matthew and Ricky, her 14 great grandchildren, and her 7 great-great-grandchildren She will be greatly missed by her loving family.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday October 3rd at 11am. It will be held Martin Mortuary. There will be gravesite services at 12:30 at Grand Junction Memorial Gardens. We will also have a catered reception immediately following the graveside service at Martin Mortuary at 1pm.
