Max was born on June 29, 1931 in Trimbach, Kanton Solothurn in Switzerland as the only son to Gottfried Sommer and Anna Sommer-Strub. He grew up and attended schools in Basel, Switzerland eventually earning a PhD in Geology with a thesis on the ‘Geology of Leyellsland’ (Greenland). On June 25, 1955, he married his longtime sweetheart Lisbeth Oesterle and ventured out into the world making his career as a petroleum geologist. They lived in North Africa, France, Switzerland, West Virginia and Colorado. Max earned much respect in his profession and was a truly honest and generous person. As an educated scientist and geologist, he was in awe of the magnificence of creation and his relationship with earth became deeply spiritual. Later in life, he became increasingly committed to his faith as a means for helping others with their spiritual needs. He was married to Lisbeth for 58 years and is survived by his three sons Andreas, Jurg and Peter, as well as 4 grandchildren and his good friend Frances Parker.
