

He was born on August 5, 1927, in Olton, Texas. As a young boy, Murl and his siblings worked in the cotton fields of west Texas and endured the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 30s before moving with his family to Colorado, which he always considered his home state.
During World War II, Murl served in the Navy aboard a minesweeper in Japan. After World War II, he worked in various occupations including as a working cowboy in the Cedaredge area, and master diesel and farm machinery mechanic. An avid outdoorsman, Murl loved hunting, fishing, and camping. Above all, he loved being with his family, who were central to his life.
He is survived by his sister, Aline Boyd; brother, Johnny Thomas; son, Glen Thomas wife, Sherry; daughter, Joy Spalding and husband, Will; son, John Thomas; and many grandchildren. Murl was preceded in death by Barbara Thomas, his beloved wife of 62 years, and six siblings.
Murl's life will be celebrated by family and all who loved him on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Callahan Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Road, Grand Junction, CO 81505. Following the funeral service will be a burial from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Orchard Mesa Cemetery, 2620 Legacy Way, Grand Junction, CO 81503.
