Payton is mourned by his wife, Lyn Carro Valiente, parents Art Smith and Ann Gibson, siblings Justin Remington (Sarah) and Beatrice Solbrook (Thomas), as well as their children Finley Remington and Lincoln and Elijah Solbrook. Also, aunts and an uncle and cousins in Massachusetts and Canada.
Family remembers Payton for his high energy, fierce work ethic, his easy connection to people, love of good food and wine, and delight in preparing and sharing wonderful meals.
Payton's training at the Culinary Institute of America gave him the skills to work anywhere and he took advantage. He worked in New Zealand, Shanghai and Thailand, his favorite place.
Between these adventures, Payton worked at restaurants and wineries in Napa, most recently Dakota Shy Winery.
