Phyllis Jean Nylund was born April 30, 1928, to Edwin and Gladys Nylund in Grand Junction, Co. She spent her childhood in GJ and graduated from Grand Junction High School. Phyllis attended the University of Denver on a music scholarship and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Elementary Education. Phyllis married her husband, Warren Turner, in 1947.
Phyllis taught school in Boulder while Warren attended law school. After his graduation, they moved to Casper, WY for his job with Shell Oil. Their daughter Katherine was born there. They soon returned to Grand Junction where son David and daughter Lee were born. Warren practiced law there for many years, and Phyllis was a homemaker and mother. Her family was always very precious to her.
Phyllis had many interests. She loved music, especially piano, and she always had one or two books she was reading. Phillis loved the outdoors- gardening, skiing, tennis, golf, and biking ( in her younger years). She felt living in a beautiful valley between mountains and desert was a great privilege and blessing.
Phyllis was a lifelong Christian and passed her faith on to her children. She also cherished her friends, many of whom she had known for much of her life. She was a 60+ year member of Chapter N PEO and belonged to Camaraderie, Lunch Bunch, and Birthday Club. In her later years, she made many friends with her kind caregivers at The Fountains Assisted Living.
Preceding her in death were her beloved husband Warren, her parents, grandchild Jacob Ross, and brother James Nylund. She is survived by her children Katherine (Dennis) Wagner, David (Lauree) Turner, and Lee (Jon) Ross; her grandchildren Jessica (Billy) McKeen, Karen (Zac) Slusher, Ben Turner, Molly (Cory) Engelken, Emily Ross and Luke (Brooke) Ross; and great-grandchildren Parker and Lainey McKeen, Harper and Brooke Engelken, and Maddocks and Eden Turner. Other survivors include sister-in-law Karol Nylund and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for September 14 at First Presbyterian Church. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Phyllis.
