I will always remember Thanksgiving at Aunt Faye's house, lots of good stuff to eat and football in the backyard, fishing trips, card games and football (lots of football).  I always felt welcome and will always remember the good time.

I will always cherish the memories of being with you Grandma on those summer trips to Colorado as a boy.  We would visit you about every two years or so.  Grandma I only wish I had lived nearer to you and had been able to spend more time with you.  In those times I did get to visit, I always met the same wonderful, warm and caring person who loved to talk with us and play cards with us and cooked such great food for us! So thank you for just being you!  Thank you for talking with me, making Playdough worms with me and for the trips up on the mesa where we fished and camped and just enjoyed nature together. 

Thank you for showing me, in your own genuine and unassuming way, such an example of good character and strength. I loved those summer days being with you and Grandpa and playing in the yard with my cousins.  I also remember and loved the smells surrounding your home and the views of the flat desert like mountains in the distance.  It was absolutely my favorite place to be growing up and I wished to be there more often.  But what truly made it special was the way you made us feel so welcome. You would always stand with Grandpa in the driveway and cry as we left to drive back to Florida. I have been so blessed in my life to have such wonderful grandparents and particularly devoted grandmothers. Thank you for always remembering us and for your thoughtfulness throughout the years even when distance and busyness kept us apart.

Grandma is the one who got me started in cooking, sewing, crosswords, and 1950s-1960s musicals. I still use many of the same recipes she taught me. Grandma taught me how to read a pattern and even bought me my first cross stitch kit. I remember watching her work on crosswords all the time and picking up the book when she wasn't looking and thinking I would never be as smart as her. I can remember laying on the floor in front of the TV watching The Million Dollar Mermaid, Perry Mason, and Gomer Pyle. I remember a few Christmas'  and a lot of summers. Dad's job moved us a lot so we never really felt quite at home anywhere...except at grandma's. That always felt like home. I recall one summer when Dion, Heidi and I had the choice of a Yellow Stone-Montana-Dakota vacation or a trip to grandma's and it was a no-brainer for us, of course it would be grandmas....it would always be grandmas. Places like Disney might be fun but at grandmas we were loved ... and she had fudge. I have tried my entire adult life to grow just one simple honeysuckle bush so my doorstep would smell like hers. I make summer pies around the Fourth of July and imagine sitting in her backyard watching fireworks. I can still taste the home made pickles and canned tomatoes and peaches. I remember her and Mrs Bachelor giving each other perms at the kitchen table. I remember all the things she kept on her kitchen wall, even the broken clock, because they were from her sons or grand children. I remember riding in the back of that little tiny Mustang for road trips and getting to stop at the rivers edge for crackers and cheese. I remember hoping someday I would get to have a wide brimmed hat like hers even if I wasn't much of a fisherman. Over the last eight years, every time I would call her, she would ask, ""Toni, are you still in Texas, you know they have the biggest bugs there (shudder)."" She didn't like that I was in San Antonio, but a part of me loves it here solely because she once lived here.  Grandma was kind, generous, warm, forgiving, accepting, funny, talented, beautiful, tough, resilient, wise, humorous, unique, and any other word you can find to describe one-tough-cookie who loved unconditionally. She was the greatest role model I had and I will continue to strive to live life full of silver linings the way she did. I love you grandma.
