Robert Douglas Allen, 82, of Grand Junction passed away peacefully at HopeWest on Monday, July 24, 2023. Bob was born to D. Clare and M. Eileen (Kaiser) Allen on March 5, 1941, in Olney Springs, Colorado. He was the youngest of three boys and grew up on the eastern prairie of Colorado, graduating from La Junta High School in 1959.
After high school, Bob joined the Navy as an electronics technician. His first duty station was in Hawaii, and he often commented that, although he was in the Navy, he only spent one week aboard ship. That week took him back to the mainland and then he was off to Pax River, Maryland. There he met the love of his life, Wilma (Hartman), who was working at the Pentagon. He decided to leave the Navy behind and marry her.
The two moved around the country for his job before settling in Grand Junction in the mid-1960s. He then worked in road construction and was a top-notch welder/fabricator. Together they had four children, Doug (Nicolette) Allen, David Allen, Laurinda (Kyle) Conrad, and Darrel (Amy) Allen.
Bob was the type of guy that would do anything for you. He often worked all day and then, at night, would help his children with their projects. Never once complaining about being tired. He truly was amazing. He seemed to just understand how things worked and could fix or build anything.
He wasn’t all work and no play, he was an outdoors enthusiast, he loved being a cowboy, hunting, fishing, camping, and golf. He continued to do these activities until his health wouldn’t allow him to.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest brother, Bud. He is survived by his brother, Bill, his wife, children, and six grandchildren.
A Rosary service will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Junction, CO on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 9:30am. A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:00am. A graveside service with military honors will take place at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00pm.
