Shirley Ann Britton

Shirley, 83, passed away on September 9, 2018, in Grand Junction, CO. She was born in Aguilar, CO, on April 14, 1934, to George and Isabelle Woolfe. Shirley was a coal miner’s daughter and the family moved to Crested Butte, CO, where she attended elementary school. Due to her Dad’s health, the family moved to the Paonia, CO, area at which time she attended and graduated from Paonia High School. Shirley continued her education and graduated from Central Business College in Denver. While going to college, she met her future husband, Ed, who was stationed at Lowery AFB. Shirley and Ed were married on July 18, 1953, and lived in Pittsburg, PA, where Ed was stationed until his discharge. After Ed’s discharge, they moved to Riva, MD, and then to Glen Burnie, MD. During the six years in Maryland, they had two children, Brenda and Brian. Shirley, Ed, and family moved to Delta, CO, where their son, Brent, was born. After two years in Delta, the family moved to Grand Junction in 1961. Shirley was an officer at Mesa Federal Savings and Loan for 22 years until she retired. During her working years, she was President of the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Altrusa Club, Catholic Daughters, Altar Rosary Society, Lady Elks, Women of the Moose, and on the Board of Directors of Monterey Park Apartments. Shirley was always very active and enjoyed skiing, bicycling, hiking, camping, and traveling in their motor home, especially the five trips to Alaska, and many winters in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and Arizona. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, George and Isabelle Woolfe; and her three younger sisters, Georgia Dodge, Neoma Antisdel, and Sharlene Maddox. She is survived by her husband, Ed; their children, Brenda (Marc) Clem, Brian (Rochelle), and Brent (Jennifer); eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HopeWest Hospice, 3909B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506. A graveside service will take place on Friday, October 19, at 1:00 PM at Veteran’s Cemetery in Grand Junction.
