Wayne completed his educational studies in Physical Education and Criminology at the University of Northern Colorado, Greely, in 1979. He continued on to the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1981. He was post-certified and began his law enforcement career from 1981-1996 with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department in Brighton. He worked as a Detective assigned to the “Crimes Against Persons” Unit investigating child abuse, sexual assaults and homicide cases. He also was experienced in burglary, arson, fraud, theft and white-collar crimes investigations. He served on Adams County’s SWAT Team; investigated Officer Involved Shootings; Critical Incidents; and High-Risk Narcotics Raids.
In 1996, he and his family moved to Grand Junction, CO to provide investigative expertise to the “Complex Crimes Unit.” He handled some of the most high-profile homicide cases in Mesa County and was featured at various times on “DATELINE” and “2020” -- American broadcast television concerning true crime stories.
His leadership abilities clearly highlighted themselves as he went on in his career to positions as Lieutenant and Sergeant. He served in leadership and supervisory roles for the Patrol Team; Bike Team; Field Training Officer Coordinator; Complex Crimes Unit; Patrol Division, Sec 1; Street Crimes Unit, Sec 3 Operations; Crime Reduction Unit, Sec 3 Operations; and returned back in the summer of 2021 to the Complex Crimes Unit –the work he loved the best!
He loved sharing his knowledge with others and sought to prepare others for leadership positions. His lectures, presentations and training for law enforcement personnel at Colorado Law Enforcement Officers Association; Colorado Sheriffs of Colorado Association; Human Services; Medical personnel; Mental Health; Public School personnel; Citizen groups; and Reno Model for Field Training Officers. He really was enthusiastic and humorous when teaching various groups.
Wayne was also considered an “expert witness” and testified as such in numerous court cases involving sexual assault and abuse of children; child interviewing techniques, and homicide investigations.
During his illustrious 41-year career, he received many awards and letters of commendation.
Aside from his very demanding career, Wayne also loved the simplest pleasures like spending time with his wife and family, his grandchildren, and just relaxing and watching old time movies and various TV series. He golfed, enjoyed camping, fished (but never really caught many), and loved traveling with his wife –visiting almost every state in the country—especially if that state had some historical component. He was kind, thoughtful and generous and loved his family very much.
The area that was uppermost in his life was his personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ. He was not a “religious” man but a devoted Christian believer. His Christian faith shone brightly as he used his profession and spiritual giftings to help and pray for others. He encouraged many by his kind words and gave them hope for another day. He also gave his talents happily to his home Church and blessed so many with his wisdom and insight.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Elizabeth; Sons Michael Penny (Leslie Maginn); and Rodney Sanchez (Bernadette); Daughters Tricia Duran (Andy Williams) and Jaime Kreft (John Kreft); Grandchildren Miranda, Alyssa, Avery, Conor and Ronan; Brother Paul Weyler (Monika Weyler); and Sister Rita Weyler.
