    Throughout their lives, Bill and wife Jean shared a strong faith. Bill was a prayer warrior and he loved his family. At the end of his final visit to Bill’s bedside the Chaplin at the VA asked Bill if he had any final prayer requests.  “Yes.” Bill replied.  “Pray for my children.”  
    Bill had kept an old Quaker saying written in his Grandfather’s careful script. It reads, “I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
    Bill led his life that way, even till the end sharing kindness and his sense of humor with the caregivers at the Grand Junction VA.  As a memorable show of respect as his body was wheeled from the ICU, two floors of the hospital were lined with employees. As the gurney rounded each corner and came down a new hallway a throaty “Ten-hut” was heard and hands crisply brought to brow in a “Final Salute” as he passed.
    My last words in person to Bill were when the EMTs lifted him into the ambulance for his last journey from our - his home. I squeezed his hand and looking him in the eye said, “I love you Bill.” Somehow I felt the urgency of the moment. Maintaining his grip he said, “I love you too Mark.” That last moment we shared will live with me until we meet again. Until then, I too, salute you Bill.
