Bernice Anna “Bea” Oberholzer, 96, of Grand Prairie, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026. Born May 22, 1929, in Northbrook, Illinois, she was the daughter of Arthur and Rose Straub Schildgen. Bea was one of five children and grew up surrounded by faith, family, and laughter.
In 1955, Bea married the love of her life, Donald Oberholzer. The couple devoted their lives to service, beginning as the first house parents of Shults-Lewis Children’s Home in Valparaiso, Indiana, when it opened in 1956. After her children began school, Bea continued working at Shults-Lewis in the office until her retirement in 1989. They made Valparaiso their home for over 50 years before relocating to Texas in 2008 to be near family.
Known for her humor, compassion, and generous spirit, Bea was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved crafts, especially cardmaking and knitting. Bea wrote many cards and letters to family and friends, and in turn received many cards that brightened her final months of life. Bea loved sports and faithfully cheered for her beloved Chicago Bears and Cubs. Bea was a longtime member of the Valparaiso Church of Christ and later CrossPoint Church of Christ in Grand Prairie.
Bea was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Donald Oberholzer, as well as her siblings Lou Thuente, Charlie Schildgen, Dorothy Schildgen, and her grandson, Carson Oberholzer. She is survived by her children, John Oberholzer and wife Kathy of Canon City, CO, Diane Reynolds and husband Kevin, of Grand Prairie, TX, David Oberholzer of Indianapolis, IN, and Michael and wife Trish of Owens Cross Roads, AL, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026, at CrossPoint Church of Christ, 3020 W. Bardin Road, Grand Prairie, with visitation following. A private burial will take place at DFW National Cemetery beside her beloved Don.
Bea was confident in her salvation, and her family has peace knowing she is safe and whole with Jesus and those she loved.
