Consider all the works Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!"
Cristina Moreno Gomez, who sang with her soul’s strength for 97 years, returned to her Savior God on August 29, 2020.
From her birth on November 12, 1922, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, until her last breath in Harlingen, Texas, Cristina’s life was a song of praise to her Father in Heaven.
To the lonely or hungry, Cristina was a melody of compassion. She gave away her time and possessions to help neighbors and strangers alike. She loved all of God’s creation, so that even the weakest puppy or parakeet had safe shelter in her care.
At times, Cristina was a song of deep mourning. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ramon Gomez; son Luis Gomez; daughter Rosalinda Amini; grandchild Andrew Amini; brother Severo Moreno; and three sisters, Concepcion Moreno, Maria Hermelinda Camargo, and Anita Moreno. At these times, Cristina kept her eyes on Heaven, found shelter in God’s Hands, and kept singing.
Her life’s sweetest hymn was her family. Cristina is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ramon Gomez (Dora) of Alvin and Rafael M. Gomez (Elvira) of Grand Prairie; one daughter, Maria Inez Gomez of Harlingen; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cira Mejorado of Houston.
Cristina’s family will carry a song of thankfulness in their hearts for the many years she loved, guided, and encouraged every person she met to keep their eyes on Heaven. She was a true servant of God and soldier for Christ. Like all faithful soldiers, she can rest knowing, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Cristina has returned home from the battlefield. May she rest in the joy of her victory song:
"When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!”
