Elijah’s Christian journey included membership and fellowship at Greater New Hope Baptist Church and Martin Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Monroe, Louisiana, and Kirkwood Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas.
Community
Elijah enjoyed fellowship and community through the Southside Men’s Social Club in Monroe, Louisiana.
Family
Elijah leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Terry Ann Nellams Herring; his children, Christine Nellams Bradford, Marcus Terral Herring, and Johnathon Bernard Higgins; and his grandchildren, Xavier O’Brien Herring, Micheala Louise Bradford, Victor Scott, Ka’Moriya Davis, and Cydnee Patt.
He is also survived by his siblings, Dell Smart Gray, Roosevelt Smart Jr., Johnny Herring Jr., Dessie Smart Wright, and Alford Smart; and his in-laws, Donna Smart, Barbara Nellams Allen, James Allen Jr., Derrick Bradford, Annetta Monk-Nellams, Rodney Nellams, and Kendria Nellams Demus.
Elijah was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie Wilford Herring,Johnny Herring Sr., Mahaley Wilford Smart, and Roosevelt Smart Sr.; his siblings, Jonathan Smart, Nellie Smart Spears, Margie Smart Jenkins, L.B.Smart, Roberta Smart, Howard Herring Sr., Pearlie Herring, and Jesse Smart Sr.; and his children, Lakeshia Maria Herring and Myeshia Laria Herring.
His memory will forever be cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren,siblings, extended family, church family, and many friends whose lives he touched..
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Kirkwood Temple C.M.E. Church Family Life Center.
