Elva Topete, 79, of Mission, TX died peacefully in her sleep on April 5, 2018, after a long and courageous nine-year battle with cancer, in Grand Prairie, TX. Elva was a firm believer in God and the power of prayer. Her worldview and understanding of God’s love were greatly influenced by her religious upbringing. In her youth, she attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, TX. It was there that she received a Catholic education. In her adulthood, she became a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grand Prairie, TX. Elva had a strong devotion to Our Lady of San Juan and would visit the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine when she returned to her hometown to visit her mother, daughter, grandchildren, and siblings.

Elva was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She always put her family and others before herself. She encouraged and nurtured their spiritual growth and development. Always willing to help those in need, she was a living example of the meaning of sacrificial and self-giving love.

Elva’s favorite pastimes included sitting outdoors during warm summer days with her husband or with friends and neighbors, hand quilting with her mom, garage sale hunting, and watching Spanish novelas.

Elva is preceded in death by her parents, Maria Linares and Abel De Leon; husband Faustino Topete; daughter Irene Topete; brother Enrique De Leon; and sister Maria Elena Padron. Elva is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, San Juanita and Jose Esquivel; son Gregorio Topete; daughter Ericka Topete; 3 grandchildren, Pamela Esquivel, Josiah Esquivel, and Joseph Esquivel.; siblings, Ernestina Mendiola, Elisa Garcia, Enedina Arias, Elia Gutierrez and Heraclio De Leon.

I remember all the parties at the Topete house. Tia Elva was always in the kitchen cooking. Every time we would see her she would walk up to me and pinch my cheeks, she even did it in the middle of Wal-Mart! She fought a tough fight. Praying for strength and peace in the coming days.
