Imelda was born on February 23, 1951, in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Philippines, to the late Honorio Montoya Cunanan and Gliceria Enriquez Chia. She was the third child in a family of four sisters: Erlinda Cunanan Mabul, Lolita Cunanan Albano, and Elena Cunanan Pineda.
Known for her kindness, compassion, and strong-willed spirit, Imelda touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She carried herself with courage and determination, yet her warmth and joyful nature made people feel at ease. She had a gift for storytelling and brought humor to any gathering.
Imelda pursued her calling in nursing and graduated from La Concordia College in Paco, Manila, Philippines. She began her career at Metropolitan Hospital in Manila before continuing her vocation in the United States as a nurse at Baylor Medical Center in downtown Dallas, Texas, in the orthopedic unit. Nursing was a true calling rooted in service and empathy.
Outside of work, Imelda embraced life with creativity. She loved dancing and singing, and she served as a dedicated choreographer for Couples for Christ and Missionary Families of Christ celebrations. Many remember her for bringing people together through music and fellowship. She also expressed her love through baking; her homemade pecan tassies and flan became family favorites.
Her kindness extended far beyond her family. She faithfully supported charitable organizations dedicated to helping the poor, including Gawad Kalinga, believing deeply in the importance of helping those in need.
A woman of unwavering faith, Imelda devoted her life to serving God. She was a pioneer in establishing the Handmaids ministry for the Missionary Families of Christ in the Dallas area. She was also an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister, participated in the music ministry, and served as a sacristan.
Imelda lived a rich and meaningful life centered on faith, family, and service. She was a devoted aunt to her five nieces and four nephews, and a loving presence to her 18 grandchildren, whom she embraced with warmth and love.
She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Erlinda Cunanan Mabul and Lolita Cunanan Albano; her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren; her brothers and sisters in the Missionary Families of Christ; and many dear friends. She is now reunited in eternal peace with her beloved sister, Elena Cunanan Pineda, and her parents.
Imelda’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith in action. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched through her kindness, laughter, and devotion.
Forever in our hearts.
“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord, and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ.”
