Joyce was born in Hitchcock, TX to the parentage of Alvin and Henrietta Johnson.
She graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1976, gave birth to a baby girl, Delandra LaTrel Johnson. She then graduated from College of the Mainland 2 years later, then gave birth to Kenneth Paul Johnson.
She worked P/T leading exercise classes and delivering newspapers all the while being fully employed by GTE. Joyce was always determined to be the best single mother she could be.
Eventually, GTE sent her to the DFW Metroplex where she enjoyed the remainder of her life. GTE became Verizon and Joyce continued to flourish within leadership roles and with responsibilities. She trained associates locally and throughout Texas. Joyce dedicated her life to her family, job, and friends.
Joyce never knew a stranger, and when it came to her family, home, and wallet her heart was ALWAYS open to those in need. She eventually met the love of her life, Pete Werner. It was obvious that she was the happiest she had ever been. They were happily married in 2007. Her marriage was a pivotal milestone in her life. She was complete! She was even introduced to Deer Lease hunting, camping, and lots of camouflage. Joyce really enjoyed traveling and entertaining family. Gumbo was her culinary specialty, and Greens and Cornbread Dressing was her staple at Thanksgiving.
After 30 years, Joyce finally retired from Verizon as an Instructor in 2011. She still shared her love with others by delivering for Meals on Wheels - Grand Prairie. She'd deliver come rain, sleet, or shine! This was something that she and Pete enjoyed doing together for the next 12 years. She always gave them something special during the holidays. Joyce truly enjoyed serving her clients and they loved her dearly in return.
Her favourite music was Reggae and Jazz. Her favourite artists were Yellowman, Anita Baker, Kenny G, and Michael Jackson. She never let anyone forget that she was born the same year as MJ!
Joyce was very proud of her daughter LaTrel. They communicated almost daily to keep each other up to date on the grandkids and LaTrel's busy schedule. Joyce' greatest joy was her 3 grandkids! She spoiled them as if she had them first! They knew their "Mimi" loved them unconditionally. Whatever they wanted or did NOT need, she bought it! She'd always ask for their Christmas lists every September.
Her love for animals was never a question. She always had birds and fish, but mostly dogs. For many years, the family knew that King came first! Then there was Sandle, Skeeter, Max, Dixie, and her grand-dog Snoopy.
Joyce is preceded in death by her only son, Kenneth "Baby Bubba" Johnson; Parents Alvin Johnson and Henrietta Martin; Sisters Dottie Johnson, Jackie Davis, Florida "Tiny" Frenchwood, Lila Johnson; Brothers Floyd Johnson, Arthur Johnson, and Steve Johnson.
She leaves, with broken hearts, her Husband Pete Werner, Daughter LaTrel Johnson (Carlito Powers), Sister Alice Johnson, Brothers Van Johnson and Terry Johnson, Grandchildren Commya LaTrel, Carlito Laphonn II, and Carmello LaKenneth; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
