Mr. Leroy Elwood Wilson was born on September 30, 1938, in Beckley, West Virginia, to the late James Wilson and Grace Barrett Wilson. He peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, family, service, and music.
Leroy graduated from Stratton High School in Beckley, West Virginia, in 1956 and later attended Queens College in Queens, New York, where he pursued his passion for music. An intellectual and articulate man with an extensive vocabulary, Leroy was known for his wisdom, thoughtful conversations, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
In 1956, Leroy proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably until 1960 and achieving the rank of Airman Second Class. The discipline, attention to detail, and pride he developed during his military service remained evident throughout his life.
Following his military service, Leroy relocated to New York, where he built a successful career. He worked for the United States Postal Service from 1960 to 1969 before beginning a distinguished career with the New York Telephone Company, where he served as a Service Technician from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.
In March of 1960, Leroy met the love of his life, Vernestine Jones, through an introduction by his brother, Howard. After a three-year courtship, they were united in marriage on June 15, 1963. Together they shared an extraordinary 59 years of marriage, a beautiful testament to unwavering love, commitment, and devotion.
Music was Leroy's lifelong passion and played a defining role in his life's journey. He performed alongside his brothers in a singing group known as The Wilson Brothers. Formed in 1967, the group remained active through the mid-1970s and was among the first African American groups signed to the RCA label. In 1970, The Wilson Brothers appeared at the legendary Apollo Theater during Easter Weekend, opening for Gladys Knight and The Pips. Though their recording contract ended in the early 1970s, Leroy's love for music never faded.
Leroy was also a devoted sports fan whose loyalty never wavered. He faithfully supported his beloved New York Jets, New York Mets, and New York Knicks, standing by his teams through both victories and challenging seasons.
Known for his impeccable style, Leroy was always well-groomed and sharply dressed. Every outfit was carefully selected, neatly pressed, and perfectly coordinated. His polished appearance reflected the discipline he learned in the Air Force and the pride he took in presenting himself with dignity and excellence.
Above all, Leroy was a man of great principles, compassion, and deep love for his family. His kindness, wisdom, integrity, and gentle spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Leroy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vernestine Jones Wilson; his parents, James Wilson and Grace Barrett Wilson; and his brothers, Howard Wilson, Ernest Wilson, Melvin Wilson, and Clarence Wilson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children: Frank Jones (Debra), Paul Wilson (Venice), and Sean Wilson (Ramona). He is also survived by his siblings, Albert Wilson, Carla Alston (Ben), Patricia Wilson and Frederick Wilson; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though Leroy's earthly journey has ended, his legacy of love, music, service, and devotion will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. His memory will forever be treasured and his presence deeply missed.
