Nancy Lane Montgomery Hughes passed away January 7, 2013. She was born December 18, 1929 in Dallas, TX to Robert J. Montgomery and Henrietta Lane. Growing up Nancy lived just down the street from Father Smith and Christ Episcopal Church. She became a life-long Episcopalian. After the family moved, Nancy and her siblings had to catch a cable car without adult supervision in order to attend Christ Church. She graduated Sunset High School in Oak Cliff. She was married December 27, 1957 to Loyd Hughes and they had 5 wonderful children.
Nancy was very witty, cheerful and very sassy. Her granddaughters would often say that they wanted to grow up to be as sassy as she was. Nancy enjoyed reading fiction, especially English novels and the occasional romance when it was given to her. She was a mentor to all her children and a dedicated caregiver to her mother, aunt and youngest daughter in their time of need.
Holidays were important and were always celebrated in her home, even as the family expanded. She was a true Cowboys and Rangers fan and she would take her children to their games when they were younger.
Nancy was very involved in her church, St. Andrew’s, in Grand Prairie. She was inducted in the Court of St. Andrew’s and helped with VBS, Sunday School and the bookstore.
Nancy loved spending time in her garden. She had flowers that were from her mother’s garden. You would almost always find irises and roses and she would share them with other neighbors on the block. She took great care of her garden and her yard, mowing her very own ½ acre lot up to the age of 80.
She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Henrietta, daughter Sharon Swiney, sisters Sara Winston, JoAnn Fladger, Caroline Montgomery and brother Robert Montgomery.
She is survived by her daughters Melisa Warren and husband David, Laurie McLellan and husband Richard, Suzanne Donaldson and husband John; son, Wayne Hughes and wife Tina; son-in-law Dewayne Swiney; grandchildren Chris, Jennifer, Rachael, Lauren, Caryn, Crystal, Catherine, Rebecca, Aaron, Ryan, Kristan, Tabitha, Natalie and Cole; great-grandchildren Brittany, Ashley, Kira and Julian.
A memorial service will be held Thursday January 10, 2013 at St. Andrew’s 727 Hill St. Grand Prairie, TX at 10:30am.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to St. Andrew’s.
