Roy Payton Strickland

After a decades long battle with Parkinson’s disease, Roy Payton Strickland passed away at the age of 76 on May 25, 2023 in Grand Prairie. Roy was born July 23, 1946 in Mineral Wells but was raised in Grand Prairie where he graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1964 and then enlisted in the US Marines Corps and served in the reserve for 6 years being honorably discharged as a Sergeant.

Roy was married to Tina Jo Mauldin on June 10, 1966 and within a year their family started.

Roy settled into a career with the US Postal Service and spent his time with hobbies such as bowling, golf, and biking with the GP Bike Club among other things, all mostly put aside so that he could use his spare time coaching his children Michael and Alanna in baseball and softball. After a 35 year career with the US Postal Service serving in many capacities, Roy retired to continue his passions of collecting clocks and watches with his good friend Tom Cypert, flea marketing, hitting garage sales and pawn shops, even working at a Pawn Shop in “retirement” for a while where he spent most (maybe all) of his pay on buying items coming out of pawn to bring them home to tinker with in his shop. He became a wandering nomad with his wife Tina as they traveled around Texas and other states watching their 5 grandchildren participate in various sports and activities over the last 20+ years.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents Weldon Ardie Strickland and Georgia Lemley Strickland, his sisters and brother; Janelle Slay, Sue Nowak, Ouida Yarbrough, and J.L. Strickland; and his beloved daughter Alesia Renee Strickland at the age of 8.

Roy is survived by his wife Tina Strickland; son, Michael (Kimberly) Strickland; daughter, Alanna (Marty) Crawford; grandchildren, Ashton (Kole) Holecek, Dakota Strickland, Jett Strickland, Jackson Crawford, and A.J. Crawford; and great grandchild, Harlen Holecek.

A Memorial Service will be held for Roy Friday, June 30, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Grand Prairie Funeral Home, 733 Dalworth Street, Grand Prairie TX 75050.
