Known to family and friends as Buddy, he was a devoted father, veteran, businessman, and friend. He is survived by his son, Andrew Nelson, and his sisters, Brenda, April, and Sarah.
Born in 1945, Buddy faced significant challenges early in life. Through determination, perseverance, and a belief in hard work, he overcame obstacles that might have discouraged others. He earned his undergraduate degree from Ball State University before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served in a field hospital during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he continued his education and earned a master's degree from Emory University.
While family was always at the center of Buddy's life, he was especially proud of the time he spent coaching, encouraging, and supporting his son throughout childhood and athletics. A dedicated supporter of youth sports, Buddy was instrumental in helping establish a local high school wrestling program, creating opportunities for student athletes that continued long after his own son had graduated.
Buddy shared more than twenty years of marriage with Jo Ellen Nelson, and together they raised their son, Andrew. Their shared commitment to family remained an important part of his life.
Later in life, Buddy built and operated a successful small business, taking great pride in creating something of his own through dedication, hard work, and perseverance.
Buddy will be remembered for his resilience, determination, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the people he cared about. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, service, and commitment to family that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
He will be deeply missed.
