On December 22, 1941 at the age of 18 he married the love of his life Jane. In 1943 while Jane was pregnant with their first child, Troy, serving in the US Army during WWII, was deployed to the South Pacific for 2 years. After returning home to his family and beautiful new daughter Sandra, they stayed in Arlington, Texas for the birth of their second daughter Jerri. Soon after, they settled in Grand Prairie. Troy worked as a letter carrier for the Grand Prairie Post Office for many years and then he and Jane retired permanently. Troy really had a “work to play” philosophy. While he always was a hard worker, he enjoyed many hobbies and activities in his leisure time. “Back in the day”, he was an avid golfer and he played softball for the Grand Prairie USPS team.
Troy loved boating and fishing. With help from his family and closest friends, he built an A frame cottage on Lake Tawakoni which everyone enjoyed for years. After retirement, he and Jane travelled the country with their RV club, “the Merry Mobile Methodists”. In addition to the many activities Troy enjoyed, he played guitar and sang with the Sage Brush Trio. The trio would travel around the DFW area entertaining many people in the community and every year they played at the State Fair of Texas. Forever an advocate of Grand Prairie, Troy did a tremendous amount of volunteer work for the city. Among so many other things, Troy was a past president of the AARP, a volunteer for the Grand Prairie Tourist Commission, and a huge Grand Prairie Gophers football fan.
Troy was “one of a kind”. He always had a smile on his face and a song on the “tip of his lips”. He was many different things to many different people but above all he was a good and honorable man, a very religious man, and a wonderful father. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane, his brothers JT Sproles, Louis Sproles, and Ray Sproles; sisters Lucille Moore, Bonnie Blakely, Flora Roswell, Betty Sproles and grandson Troy Pitts. He is survived by his daughters Sandra Pitts and Jerri Young; grandson Brad Pitts and his wife Kim; great-grandchildren Clay Pitts, Miranda Pitts, Cole Pitts, Cameron Pitts; brother Leon Sproles; sister Virginia Sproles; nieces Nancy Miller, Delores Mance and many other close nieces and nephews.
