

He was born on August 5, 1957, in Savannah, Georgia. Vernon graduated from high school in 1975 and went on to attend the University of Houston, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in May 1979. He continued his education at law school, earning his Juris Doctor degree in 1981. Vernon was an attorney from 1982-2012.
On February 4, 1983, Vernon married the love of his life, Betty Vernon, and together they shared 42 wonderful years of marriage.
Vernon built a successful career as a lawyer and later retired after years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he enjoyed life’s simpler pleasures, often spending time playing chess and attending horse races.
A devoted man of faith, Vernon was a member of the Church of Saint John, where his presence and fellowship were cherished.
He will be remembered for his sharp mind, his commitment to justice, and the love he held for his family and friends
Vernon is survived by his spouse Betty; sons Rondie Smith and Randall Smith; siblings Gail Nelson, Patrick Lewis and Teresa Hudson and her husband Todd. Nieces Patriana Lewis, Celeste (Lewis) Cuello, Chantanel Lewis, Tane’sha (Nelson) Cheptoo, Taylor Hudson, and Jasmin Hudson. Nephews Bennie Nelson Jr., Carl Lewis and Todd Hudson; grandchildren Asia Vernon and her mother Evelyn Vernon, grandsons, Malcolm Smith, Marcus Martinez, and their mother Christina Martinez. Granddaughter Alexis Smith and her mother Susan Loera; cousins Eugene “Alan” Lewis and Vanessa Lewis, DeLawrence and Billie Dewitt, and Anna Hoffman; Uncle Walter Coates and Aunt Lenore Coates, sister-in-law Hilda Brown, and nephew Michael Brown, as well as four great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; and many loving cousins and family.
Vernon is preceded in death by his stepson, Randy Vernon, parents Robert Lewis, Sr, and Lydia Lewis; and siblings Pamela Lewis and Robert “Bobby” Lewis, Jr.
A visitation for Vernon will be held Friday, August 22, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Grand Prairie Funeral Home chapel located at 733 Dalworth Street, Grand Prairie, TX 75050. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Funeral Home.
