Walsie Oswald Coombs, 86, of Grand Prairie, Texas was born in Walkers Wood, Jamaica on 29 January, 1932 to Gerald and Violet. Walsie spent the first half of his life in Jamaica, enjoying his youth and adult years in the towns of Walkers Wood, and Moneague in St. Ann’s and Bog Walk and Linstead in St. Catherine. Along the way he learned a mechanical skill and eventually became a heavy equipment operator where he worked for ALCAN Bauxite Company in Moneague. During this time frame, he fathered Sharon, Marvin, Sonia, Andrew and Jacqueline. Upon working for ALCAN for a few years, he saw that opportunities were limited not only for himself but for his children, and decided to migrate. This was somewhat of a hard decision for him, besides leaving his young children, he also had to leave a person he loved dearly, his mother.
Walsie migrated to New York in 1968. The initial years were a challenge in establishing himself and he worked odd jobs. His fortune changed and he found a stable job working for United Parcel Service. He worked for UPS for over 20 years which allowed him to establish himself and provide for his family. He married Grace (Patsy) Mahoney, purchased a home and did the things for which he enjoyed, being in the lives of his children and working on his cars. His time in New York also saw the birth of Violet and a step-father to Keithia (deceased), Telethia, Jessica, and O’Neil . Upon retiring from UPS, he moved to Texas where he spent the remaining years of his life. Dad passed on 22 February 2018. He was loved for his spirited approach to life and will be dearly miss by us all.
