

Wendel was born on January 30, 1936, at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, TX. He graduated from Forest Avenue High School in 1952 at the age of 16.
He attended Texas A&M College where he received his B.S., Civil Engineering Degree in 1956. He and Betty Lou Bell were married on December 23, 1955.
Wendel served time in the Army after graduation and then began working at the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS. He was honorably discharged from the Army as Captain in 1966.
In 1960, they moved back to Texas where Wendel decided to pursue a law degree at SMU School of Law. This required a 5-year commitment, 5 nights a week while working a full-time job. He received his Juris Doctor, SMU School of Law in 1968. In 1964, Wendel began his career with the City of Grand Prairie. He served this city as City Engineer, Assistant Director of Public Works, Director of Public Works, Assistant City Manager, City Manager, and Management Consultant. He served as City Attorney on an interim basis. In 1990, Wendel retired and opened his law office, where he enjoyed his practice for 25 years.
Wendel was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie. He served on numerous committees, was a member of many professional societies, and participated in Grand Prairie community activities such as Chamber of Commerce, Director; Y.M.C.A. Chairman, Board of Management; Jaycees, Past President; Rotary Club, Past President; Paul Harris Fellow; American Cancer Society, Board Member; Grand Prairie Arts Council, Board Member; and many more. Wendel was named Public Works “Man of the Year” in Texas and received an Ethics award for his distinguished service to the public.
Wendel did everything with honesty and integrity. He had very strong values and a pleasant personality. His laugh was contagious, and he always had time for a funny story. He and Betty enjoyed taking trips with friends and spending time with family.
Wendel is preceded in death by his parents, Thad and Alpha Hulse, his son-in-law, Benjamin Bryan, and Granddaughter, Jaci Abbott.
He is survived and missed by his loving wife, Betty, daughters Laurie Johnson and husband Wayne, and Marsha Edwards and husband Dan, as well as six grandchildren Cole, Lauren, Mareesa, Adam, Shannon and Samantha and 8 great grandchildren.
Wendel’s life will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 10th at First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie. Visitation will be at 10:00 A.M., followed by the service at 11:00 A.M.
