Betty Oldenburg, age 95, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024 after enjoying a long journey and sharing it with family and others. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Kenneth Oldenburg; sister, Geraldine Schulze; and sister-in-law, Jean Heffren. She is survived by: children, Dale Oldenburg, Carol (Greg) Hopping, Ross Oldenburg, Mark (Paige) Oldenburg, and Craig (Mary) Oldenburg; as well as, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Betty was proud to have worked at Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago, prior to meeting and marrying Kenneth and raising five children. She dedicated her life to God and to her family. Through her actions she taught her children that they could accomplish anything, while being thrifty at the same time. Betty and Kenneth enjoyed traveling together and would take unusual detours to include visits with family. Lifelong friendships were developed through Betty’s many activities with St. James Lutheran Church, as well as through her pursuits of painting, bowling, golf and her years of volunteer work at Meijer Gardens. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. A funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, March 29, 2024, at St. James Lutheran Church, 2040 Oakwood Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505, at 11:00 am. The family will welcome guests one hour prior to the start of the service. Betty will be laid to rest at Fairplains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James Lutheran, ISJ Academy Lutheran School, or The American Cancer Society.
