

She was born Charlene Ann VanRiper, to Cleon VanRiper and Margaret Nonemacher VanRiper, on January 16, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan.
Char graduated from John Pershing High School in 1955 and attended Wayne State University and Bob Jones University. She was married to V.K. Bryde from 1958 to 2001 and married to Richard Kinney from 2006 to 2026.
She lived in Michigan, Connecticut, and Florida, and had a career in administration for various companies including Michigan Bell, Bank of Detroit, Ford Motor Company, USPS, Sam’s Club, Shoney’s Inn and Manatee County.
Char was a member of Women of Faith, Christian Women’s Club, Trinity Baptist Church, Christian Motorcyclists Association and Women’s International Bowling Congress, among others. She had a love for dogs, bowling, softball, motorcycles, sportscars, the ocean and lighthouses. Her biggest passion was her love for her Savior Jesus Christ, for whom she travelled the country speaking at women’s conferences.
She is survived by her husband Richard Kinney; children, Scott Bryde and Suzanne Black; grandchildren, Alyson Bryde, Gavyn Bryde, Rachel Black, Naomi Black, Isaiah Black, Josiah Black; step-daughters, Jeanne Jerry and Ginger DeVries; and step-grandchildren, Andrea Jerry, Daniel Jerry and Clara Slagell.
A private family remembrance will be held on a future date in Rockford, Michigan.
