OBITUARY

Diane Kay Hammond

December 22, 1963July 11, 2019

On Thursday, July 11, 2019, Diane Kay Hammond, age 55, passed into the loving arms of Jesus while surrounded by her family and her beloved dog Rutherford after a lifetime battle against Crohn's disease and a more recent courageous battle against cancer . Diane was born on December 22, 1963 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late John and Lucille (Bricker) Burkholder. She is survived by her devoted husband Steven, her three children Ryan Wabich (Erica), Emily Wabich, and Megan Hicks (Conner), her two grandchildren Gabriel and Lydia, her brother John (Sandy) Burkholder, and sisters Patricia (Brian) Grusnis and Cheryl (Clark) Pierson, along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Diane was a hard-working, intelligent woman who had a zest for life. She loved creating memories with her family and friends and was constantly finding new ways for everyone to have fun, whether it was an impromptu trip to Mackinaw Island or a random day of go-karts and mini golf. Diane was a giver, a woman always putting others before herself, and made everyone around her feel special and loved. She was a 27-year employee for Blue Care Network who worked her way up and prided herself on her strong work ethic. Her calm spirit and happy personality will be constantly missed by all of those that knew her. A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18 from 4pm-6pm and 7pm-9pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, July 19 at 11am with a Memorial Visitation from 10am-11 at St. Jude Catholic Church located at 1120 Four Mile Rd NE Grand Rapids, MI 49525 with a luncheon to follow. In honor of Diane, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity, Chron’s & Colitis Foundation ( http://online.chrohnscolitisfoundation ).

IN GOD'S TOMORROW THERE IS ETERNAL SPRING

All nature heeds the call of spring
As God awakens everything,
And all that seemed so dead and still
Experiences a sudden thrill
As springtime lays a magic hand
Across God’s vast land.
Oh, how can anyone stand by
And watch a sapphire springtime sky
Or see a fragile flower break through
What just a day ago or two
Seemed barren ground still hard with frost.
But in God’s world no life is lost,
But when they hear spring’s waking sound
They push themselves through layers of clay
To reach the sunlight of God’s day.
And man, like flowers, too, must sleep
Until he is called from the darkened deep
To live in that place where angels sing
And where there is eternal spring?

Forever grateful for your love and friendship. I will miss you dearly my good friend. Love Phyl

I never had the pleasure of knowing Diane but I know and love her daughter, Emily, like a sister. Emily resembles her mom and I know Emily to be beautiful inside and out. I get to watch Emily share her beautiful gifts (zest for life and compassionate love) while on mission trips to Guatemala. I now know this is part of Diane’s legacy. Sandy and I would like to express our sincere condolences along with our prayers.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of Diane. I have so many happy memories of our childhood together. She had such a zest for life, and a love that came through in everything she did, and is so evident in in everyone she's left behind.
My family is heartbroken over your loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts, and in our hearts.

Love,
