Don was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attended Union High School. Following High School, he joined the US Navy. He married Ruth Van Solkema on May 3, 1963 and worked as a Brick Mason for many years. To support his children's Christian education, he plowed snow. He did that well into retirement, often making his rounds to anyone in need. In "retirement" Don worked for Sharpe BMW for nine years as a service porter.
A loving role model for his children, he was often found kneeling in prayer before bedtime. An honest and humble man, he led his family by setting a faithful example for all.
He had a passion for canoeing, watching motorsports, softball, bowling, downhill skiing, and golf. Until age 50, he called golf "a silly game" but in later years he was an avid golfer and even achieved two hole-in-ones.
Ruth and Don both volunteered at CRWRC/World Renew for ten years, travelling to help rebuild after disaster relief.
Don faithfully attended East Leonard Christian Reformed Church for over 60 years. In that time, he served as a cadet counselor, deacon elder, and trust fund committee member. He had a passion for ministering to others, often passing out bibles to local businesses and hiring people regardless of their backgrounds.
Don was preceded in death by his son, Mike Vander Horn in 2019; and brother, Ed Vander Horn.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Vander Horn; children, Mari Sorokin (Tim), Shari Dykstra (Ron), Vonda Smestad (Jim), and Dan Vander Horn (Angie); grandchildren, Brandon (Madeline), Amanda (Nate), Jordan, Jacob, Josh, Kyle (Michelle), Britany (Mark), Rachel (Blake), Russ, Mason, Mac, Kenzie, Madi, Ryley, and Zach; great-grandchildren, Zander and Maverick; brothers, Larry and Ken (Helaine); sister-in-law, Kathy; many nieces and nephews; and incredible friends, Don & Marilynn Prince.
