wife, Dolores, of 69 years preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Eugene (Helen) Westra
and his children – Karen (Richard) Langeland, Bruce (Pamela) Westra, Kristine (Don, who is riding horses in heaven) Allred, Jo (Mark) Cooper, Michael (Pat) Westra, and Amy (James) Hop, 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Dore’ was born on February 22, 1925. He served in the Army during World War II in the Engineer
Division. He was an expert motorcycle rider and also served as a courier. After his discharge from the
service, Dore’ married Dolores (Roelofs) Westra on October 2, 1947. During his life he was a business
owner as a General Contractor and a “gentleman farmer.” In the most recent past, Dore’ worked for
Home Repair Services. His very last retirement was finally in June of 2018, making a total of 40 years
with HRS, where he loved serving the Grand Rapids community with his good friend and partner, Bob
Hengeveld. He was a self-educated, master craftsman. There wasn’t a challenge in the home
building/wood-working process that he could not meet.
One important service was his work with Set Free Ministries. He highly valued his volunteer role with
Set Free. Other favorite pass-times were reading his favorite authors Louis L’Amour and Gene Stratton
Porter. He also became a master of making Rhubarb Custard Pie and Zucchini Bread.
The family is planning a Memorial Service for May 2, 2019, at Christ Church, 2500 Breton SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49456, with visitation at 1:00 PM and the service held at 2:00 PM. A simple reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Dore’ would wish for donations made to Potter’s House Christian School. He
cherished their mission.
