Doris Ruth Schaner “Blondie”, age 89, of Grand Rapids, MI was called to her heavenly home on Friday, February 16, 2018. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1929 to Henry and Gertrude Prince. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Donald F. Schaner and 2 sisters, Eleanor Becker and Faye Prince. Doris is survived by her children Howard (Virginia), Sandra, Gary, Rick, Darryl (Denise) Schaner and Debra (Thomas) Merlington; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren with one on the way; 1 great-great grandchild with one on the way and her brother John Prince as well as in-laws Lyle Perske, Ruth Czarnecki, Dick Schaner, Russ and Bev Schaner and Maxine Schaner and many nieces and nephews. For many years Doris and Donald sold produce at the Grand Rapids farmers markets. She also worked at Romence Gardens and was an active, long time member of Blythefield Christian Reformed Church. Doris was an avid vegetable gardener and loved fishing. A Funeral Service officiated by Rev. Darren Compagner will be held on Wednesday February 21, 2018 at Reyers North Valley Chapel at 11:00 am with visitation beginning an hour prior at 10:00 am. Doris will be laid to rest next to Donald in Kent Memorial Gardens. Doris’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the compassionate care bestowed on Doris by the staff of Spectrum Health Hospice & Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Doris’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, (501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105).
