

Erling M. Smestad, aged 97, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017. Erling was born in the fall of 1919 in Grand Rapids to the late Martin and Marie Smestad. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Polly M. [Powers] who died in 1992, his siblings Margaret Phelps, Roy J. Smestad, Evelyn K. Smestad and Helen Smestad. He is survived by his brother Carl (Irene) Smestad and many nieces and nephews. Erling graduated from Central High School in 1939 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and the National Guard during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW as well as the Grand Rapids and National Red Arrow Club. Erling enjoyed working bingo for many years at the Boat and Canoe Club. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, card playing, stamp collecting and his travels with Polly. Erling was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He was a dedicated employee of the U.S. Post Office. A memorial service, with Military Honors, officiated by Pastor Kevin Sullivan, will take place at Faith Lutheran Church (2740 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505) on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11am. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church beginning at 10am. Erling will be laid to rest in Rosedale Memorial Park Cemetery.
